Almost every common mistake in home monitoring pushes the reading in the same direction: up. A full bladder, crossed legs, a cuff that's one size too small, a few words spoken while the cuff inflates — each one can quietly add points to a systolic number, and those points can be the difference between "looks fine" and "worth a conversation with your doctor." The reassuring part is that correct technique is neither complicated nor time-consuming. Why the office isn't the whole picture

Start with a validated upper-arm monitor

Cuff size is part of the device

A monitor can be perfectly validated and still give you wrong numbers if the cuff doesn't fit your arm. Logging it so your doctor can actually use it

The value of a week of readings lives in how you hand them over. A scrap of paper with a single averaged number, or a phone screen with no context, gives your doctor less to work with than the raw data you already collected. Log the essentials for each session: the date, the time, and both numbers (systolic over diastolic), plus anything notable — such as whether the reading was taken before or after medication, or whether you'd had caffeine or stress that day. When a reading is an emergency
