Alcohol and blood pressure have a relationship that is easier to describe than to condense into one tidy rule. The honest summary goes like this: within a few hours of a drink, your blood pressure can dip slightly and then rebound upward. Across months and years of regular drinking, the average trend is upward. And the more you drink, the steeper that upward slope gets. There isn't a single "safe" line every authority agrees on — but there is a clear direction to the evidence, and it's worth understanding before the next pour rather than after.

What happens in the hours after a drink

The acute story is a little counterintuitive, which is part of why alcohol's reputation gets muddled. In the first hour or two, alcohol acts as a vasodilator — it relaxes and widens small blood vessels, which is why people feel warm and flushed. That temporary widening can produce a brief dip in blood pressure. It doesn't last.

As the alcohol is metabolized and cleared, the body's stress response steps in. Heart rate rises, the sympathetic nervous system revs up, and hormones like cortisol and the catecholamines are released. Resveratrol is present in red wine only in milligram-scale amounts, far below the doses used in the lab work that sparked the interest.
